About Spann

Overview

Spann Elementary is one of 33 elementary schools in the Jackson Public School District. It serves students in grades K - 5.

History

Spann Elementary was named after a devoted teaching professional who spent her entire career educating and influencing the lives of Jackson school children.

Susie Pearl Spann, the oldest daughter of six children, was born April 1, 1888, in Rankin County, Mississippi. After her family moved to Jackson, Susie Pearl entered the Central School in the fifth grade and was graduated in the class of 1905. She attended Millsaps College and received the Bachelor of Science degree in 1909. Accepting her first teaching position in that same year with Jackson Public Schools, she launched a teaching career that would cover nearly fifty years. After forty-seven continuous years, she retired at the close of school in May because of ill health. She later died in August of that same year.

In memory of a life dedicated to service in education of the young, the grateful city of Jackson appropriately named one of its schools in her honor, Pearl Spann Elementary School.

Mission

Spann Elementary School, in partnership with our diverse, multicultural community, is committed to developing all students into lifelong learners capable of succeeding in the 21st century.

Vision

"Our vision is to become a high-achieving institution that allows each individual learner to reach his/her potential."

Goals

  • Spann Elementary will be safe, orderly, and clean.
  • All children will learn in a nurturing classroom environment.
  • Parents will actively participate in their child's education.
  • Community involvement will enhance our total school program

Morning Routine

All students will enter the building between 7 a.m.-7:45 a.m. and move directly to the cafeteria for breakfast. No student should stop by the restroom or a classroom before going to the cafeteria. After breakfast, students will sit in the hall in front of their classrooms. Students are to read or complete assignments. Assistants will be stationed in the hallways to monitor.

School Start & End Times

Tardy: Students will be marked tardy after 7:45 a.m.
Dismissal: Dismissal for the day is 2:30 p.m.

Breakfast & Lunch

All JPS students will receive FREE breakfast and lunch meals during the 2022–2023 school year as part of the Community Eligibility Program (CEP). It provides an alternative approach for offering school meals to local educational agencies and schools in low-income areas, instead of collecting individual applications for free and reduced-price meals. The CEP allows schools that predominantly serve low-income children to offer free, nutritious school meals to all students through the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs.

What makes a TRAY?

Students have a choice of a protein, grain, fruit, vegetable, and milk.
Students have to select a minimum of 3 items or a maximum of 5 items.  This must include a fruit and vegetable.

Physical Education

All students at Spann have 30 minutes a day of PE for a total of 150 minutes a week. This consists of scheduled instruction by the classroom teacher.
