English Learners
ELL Overview
The English Learner Program (ELL) at Spann Elementary provides language support for students whose first language is something other than English. Students are identified for the program based on the Home Language Survey all new students complete upon registration. If the survey indicates a language other than English, the scholar’s English language proficiency is assessed using the LAS Links Language Screener. The results of this assessment, along with other data gathered from STAR tests, previous educational experiences, and classroom observations, are used to determine the level and type of support offered.
At Spann Elementary, English Language Learners (ELs) are eligible to receive all the services and supports offered all students as well as special EL Pullout classes and One-on-One EL Tutoring.
EL Pullout classes meet for approximately 45 minutes a day, up to five days a week. These small group classes are designed to meet the specific needs of the ELLs from developing basic letter and number skills all the way up to advanced reading and writing all in a fun, safe environment.
The One-on-One EL Tutoring program provides ELs with an additional 30 minutes per week of focused support. The tutoring incorporates topics, assignments, and objectives from the EL’s main class.
The English Learner Program also assists main class teachers in modifying and differentiating learning in the classroom to ensure all ELLs are able to participate at their level and find success.
